Serino Outlines New Plan for Addressing Homelessness with $13 Million New York State Grant

That's Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino's take on the Poughkeepsie, NY, shelter that's been serving the city's homeless since the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

That's the Homeless Housing and Assistance Program, a $13 million grant from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance that will fund the construction of a new emergency housing facility at the former Dutchess County Jail, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The goal is to help people transition into permanent housing by providing them with "support services, life skills, education, and training," per a press release from Serino, who took office in January 2024.

The grant will cover the capital costs of converting the former jail site into transitional housing that will include 24 one-bedroom units, as well as space for an additional 32 two- and three-bedroom units, per the Journal.

The Daily Freeman reports the PODS has served as an emergency shelter since the start of the COVID pandemic, but that's not enough.
